One of the two grocery stores I frequent burned down the other day. It was a pretty neat Chinese grocery store in Chinatown, near where I live. I always got a kick out of the poorly translated text on the packaging of some of the products they sold. And they sold of interesting stuff you'd never find at Safeway, But very few items have any English on the packaging, so a lot of things I wouldn't have a clue how to cook. The other grocery store I frequent is also in Chinatown but they have a much wider selection of western products.
I found out the other day that Reed Leary, a former cult investigator with the RCMP in Edmonton, Alberta has recently passed away of cancer at the age of 55.
In the early 1990's Reed Leary was a member of the RCMP's Integrated
Intelligence unit, and was investigating complaints against members of the
Church of Scientology of Alberta at the time the allegations of child sexual assault were made against Scientologist Al Buttnor. As a reselt, the Church sued him and his partner for $1 million. Several years later the lawsuit was dropped.
I had the opportunity to meet with and interview Mr. Leary in late 1993 -
early 1994 when he assisted me with a documentary that I put together on
Scientology as a college project. I only met him a couple times but he
seemed like a really decent guy who believed strongly in what he was
fighting for. He will be missed.
I had a job interview yesterday for a job at a collection agency. Not exactly my dream job, but it could be an interesting challenge. It would sure force me to work on overcoming my shyness, which would be a good thing. And there's a potential to make some pretty good money. My chances of getting the job probably aren't great though, I think I probably came across as too "nice" to work in collections.
